At iDance we offer a large variety of classes for all skill levels. Our experienced instructors are passionate about helping each dancer achieve their highest potential, while also having as much fun as possible. If you haven't been to iDance yet, check out what your first night will look like.
We run classes on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting at 7pm on the dot, so make sure you're at the venue 10–15min early so you can put your stuff away, use the wharepaku, and have a warm up dance. At 7pm and 8pm each night we run two classes in parallel. You will need to be assessed before joining our more advanced classes.
The night starts with a Newcomers Class lasting 45 minutes. At the end of the class we'll play a few tunes so you can practise the moves you have just learnt.
Newcomers is open to everybody, and you don't need any special equipment or training to come along - just start dancing!
Each night we teach a different routine consisting of four moves. You'll be able to dance a full song by the end of your first lesson.
You've just finished with Newcomers, it's 8pm, so what next? Newcomer Review, of course!
This is a smaller class where we'll go through the moves you've just learnt in Newcomers. We'll give you lots of extra tips and tricks to help you get to grips with what you have just learned, and we'll do lots of dancing to make sure you've got it sussed.
Newcomer Review is open to everyone, and we highly recommend coming along while you're getting your head around the newcomer moves.
At 8pm each night, we run our Intermediate class in the main hall. In Intermediate, we'll go through 3 – 4 moves that build on the newcomer moves or introduce a new aspect to your dancing.
Intermediate follows a similar format to Newcomers, but we don't stick to a fixed set of moves or routines.
To attend Intermediate, you'll first need to complete an assessment to ensure you know the 20 newcomer moves and basic techniques. Read more about our class assessments.
Each Wednesday at 7pm, Outside the Box explores new, interesting, and different ways to help you excel at dancing and always keep it fresh and interesting.
The subject of Outside the Box will change each week. We could be exploring different kinds of tension, fun ways to mix up your style, how to interpret different kinds of music, or any number of other topics.
Because we often explore more advanced techniques and ideas in Outside the Box, you'll need to complete an Intermediate level assessment before attending. Read more about our class assessments.
You've been to heaps of Intermediate and Outside the Box classes, and you're keen to take your dancing to the next level? Intermediate Plus is here to take you even further!
In Intermediate Plus, you'll learn moves and techniques that elevate you beyond the Intermediate level, challenging you to step up your dancing with complex moves and ideas.
Intermediate Plus is restricted to those who have completed the corresponding Intermediate Plus assessment (which is different to the Intermediate assessment). Read more about our class assessments.
At the end of each night we end with freestyle, which is a chance for everyone to practice the moves they've just learned, have some awesome dances, and make some new friends.
In freestyle, you can ask people to dance, and people will ask you to dance. There aren't any set moves, and you might not even know the song that's playing, but together with your partner you'll use what you've learned in class to have a boogie. Make sure to check out the info on Safety & Etiquette for more info.
There's a wide range of classes offered at iDance aimed at dancers of different levels, and some classes may require an assessment to attend. The purpose of class assessments is to ensure you're ready for the moves and techniques that will be taught, and most importantly that you can dance safely at that level.
To attend the Intermediate and Outside the Box classes, you must first complete an Intermediate level assessment. We'll make sure you know all the newcomer moves and you're comfortable with the newcomer techniques taught in class (dancing on a slot, tension, and safety just to name a few).
If you've done 10 or more newcomers classes, and you think you're ready for an intermediate assessment, flag down one of our crew of the opposite role during freestyle. They'll have a dance with you, and if they think you're ready for Intermediate then they'll give you the OK. If not, they'll take you aside and suggest some things to work on - don't be disheartened, we'll work with you to make sure you're ready next time.
To attend the Intermediate Plus class, you must first complete an Intermediate Plus level assessment. This is more advanced than an Intermediate assessment. We'll make sure you know how to clearly communicate with your partner during a dance, how to handle more complex moves, and that you're doing all of that safely.
If you've been doing Intermediate classes for a while and you think you're ready for this assessment, you'll need to ask an iDance teacher.
